Arts and sports
Nature photography is popular in Kuusamo, largely thanks to the pioneer of nature photography, Hannu Hautala. Hautala dedicated his life’s work to capturing landscapes and animals, from reindeer to sea eagles. Päähkänäkallio, rising by the Kitka River, was Hautala’s favorite spot and can be considered the soul landscape of Kuusamo.
Kuusamo College educates new photographers every year, and the annual Kuusamo Nature Photo Festival is internationally renowned. There are also courses in visual arts, handicrafts, writing and wellness-related studies. The Kuusamo Arctic Residence Centre serves professionals in various fields of art, and the community college offers several courses in handicrafts.
There’s a sports academy for young athletes aiming for professional careers. Alpine skiers, snowboarders, ski jumpers, and cross-country skiers have risen to the top of the world from Kuusamo.
Music studies
The Kuusamo College of Music provides the foundation for both music enthusiasts and those planning a professional career in music. Music education can begin in the music kindergarten.
Open University and short courses
At the Summer University of Northern Ostrobothnia, you can take Open University studies or supplementary and certification training. You can study to become a ski instructor, study a new language or writing. There are also studies aimed at seniors and children. You can study almost anything online.
