Living in Kuusamo

Fall in love with Kuusamo

Kuusamo is an international city in northeastern Finland. The winters here are long and snowy, the autumns vibrant, and the summers warm and full of light. For those arriving from snowless countries, the winter can be a surprise with its coldness, but it’s easy to fall in love with once you learn to adapt to the weather. Proper clothing, understanding distances, and embracing the recreational opportunities offered by snow can make winter an enjoyable season.

Local culture and networking

At first, Kuusamo locals might seem a bit reserved, but you’ll gradually get to know them. Due to its proximity to the border and its growing popularity as a tourist destination, Kuusamo is becoming increasingly international each year, especially in the Ruka-Kuusamo area. Although only about three percent of Kuusamo’s population are foreigners, the number rises significantly in winter due to seasonal workers.

Showing interest in Finnish culture, customs, and their dark sense of humor will eventually warm even the most reserved locals. Local food, music, nature, and landscapes, combined with Finnish hospitality and politeness, create a wonderful experience once you dive in. The diverse range of associations and organizations provides excellent opportunities to become part of the Kuusamo community.
